How to organize your research for a nonfiction project

A video sharing how I take notes and organize them for use in nonfiction and memoir.

Hello and Happy Wednesday,

In my part of the world (Connecticut) we are having a glorious September— temps in the 70s, startling blue skies, crucified humidity, no insects or horse flies—it has been divine. What’s it like where you are? I hope you have some blue skies and sunshine, too.

In today’s post about research organization, some show-and-tell was necessary, so I’ve made a video (above). I’m not known for my tech prowess, but you should be able to:

  • Watch the video (I think a preview might show up in your email, and I also think you have to click “watch now” to see the video with sound?)

  • Listen to it like a podcast

  • Download a transcript

In the video, I share a unique way I’ve developed to take notes from outside sources and use those notes in my memoir and nonfiction projects. I hope you find the video useful and relevant, or at the very least, amusing, given that I do weird things with my mouth when I talk on camera!

Let us know in the comments how you go about conducting research and integrating it into your own narratives and manuscripts?

Thanks for being here!

  • If you are writing memoir, you should absolutely check out the Q&A exchanges from my post about memoir problems— you’re sure to find answers to questions you yourself have, along with writers who are in the same boat as you. Maybe there is someone sharing their frustrations who would be a great new friend or beta reader or simply someone you feel akin to because you’re going through the same thing as them. Thank you to everyone who shared frustrations, and trusted me to advise them.

  • On the topic of memoir, I have been in touch with the writers I might workshop for the September 18th memoir masterclass— if you have not heard from me, go ahead and sign up for the class if you are interested in taking it. (A discount code to this class for paid subscribers will come after the paywall below.)

  • If you are waiting for the memoir class to be discounted after it airs to enroll, this class won’t be discounted. Sometimes I do discounts on my Turning Points classes after the fact to give people the ability to see what they are like and judge whether the format is right for their particular style of learning, but I won’t be discounting the Memoir class or Query Writing class. If you’re interested in the Memoir class- you can join us live from 7pm-10pm EST on Wednesday September 18th, or you can watch the video after the class airs.

Sign up here. Video will be available for anyone who can’t make it live.

I’m excited for next week’s memoir masterclass and look forward to seeing some of you there! Discount code for the class comes after the paywall.

Enjoy the day!

Courtney
